Book, Music, and Lyrics by Richard Ford
The Prisoner follows the story of a Yugoslavian Partisan turned dissident as he faces imprisonment and likely execution.
Based on the life of an important Yugoslavian historical figure, Milovan Djilas falls from influential Party leader and Vice President to imprisoned dissident after his vocal criticisms of the Yugoslavian Communist regime in 1955. Despite facing death and imprisonment, he found his voice and wrote extensively while in prison and after his release. Fictional, The Prisoner follows Marko, a guard in the prison who convinces the resigned Djilas to write again. During the course of the evening we see Djilas in his prison, meeting with Tito and his generals in 1943, and during the dangerous meeting with Stalin.
